Is your RV really ready for winter storage? You may have done all that is needed to protect the waterlines and appliances from damage, but have you done all that is necessary to protect the interior from the moisture damage that can occur over the winter? This article will show you a few steps to take to ensure that the exterior winter moisture doesn't cause interior damage to your RV while it's parked for the cold weather months.
Charcoal Canisters
If winter moisture in your area isn't severe, this could be the only preventative measure you need to take. You can pick up canisters filled with charcoal at your local home improvement store or simply use charcoal in a bucket. Just remember, the charcoal can only absorb so much moisture before it is no longer effective.
Don't just throw out the charcoal when it's time to change it out. Once a month or so, dump the charcoal on a cookie sheet and put it in your oven at a low temperature for a few hours. This will cause the moisture inside the charcoal to dry and make the charcoal usable again.
Run a Dehumidifier
If the winter moisture levels in your area are relatively high, you may need to run a dehumidifier inside the cabin to keep control of the amount of moisture being allowed to seep into the interior materials. Remember that this is not a solution that can be used in freezing temperatures. If you try to run a dehumidifier and temps are dipping below freezing, the water that it is pulling out of the air will freeze inside the unit and destroy it.
When the temperatures go above freezing, run the dehumidifier as much as possible. Not only will it pull the moisture out of the air, but it will also help to pull it out of the interior materials and prevent mildew growth.
Use a Solar Air Heater
This is by far the most expensive option but it will really help to control the moisture. These air heaters are powered by the sun and will maintain a steady temperature inside the RV. Maintaining a regulated temperature will help in so many ways. It not only helps to control the moisture level, but will keep the wood from cracking if it gets too cold.
